How It All Began

It was Bay to Breakers 2017, San Francisco’s city-wide costume party. Twenty-four and eager to soak in the neighborhood’s festivities, Kat was out enjoying the day as she made her way to Alembic, a bar on Haight Street, to meet her friends, Nicole and Alina. Meanwhile, Tyler, a seasoned San Franciscan, was at the same bar with his friends, Blake and Fletcher. Neither of them expected that a casual Sunday afternoon encounter would change their lives forever.
Kat first approached Blake, curious about his ridiculous wig. Tyler, intrigued by the confident and beautiful woman chatting with his friend, jumped into the conversation. From that moment, something clicked. Before parting ways, Tyler turned to Kat and said, “Let’s go frolicking in the city.” She immediately agreed, and they exchanged numbers.
A week later, they went on their first date—Kat’s first ever in the city and Tyler’s first time hitting it off with someone so quickly. Kat, used to dating Chico boys, felt a mix of nerves and excitement about meeting a “more refined” man that went to Santa Clara. She even texted her friend Kaitie for advice on what drink to order and borrowed a leather jacket from her friend Alison (because who in SF actually owns jackets? Certainly not Kat). Tyler, on the other hand, remembers being struck by her energy and charm—he knew this date wouldn’t be their last.
They made plans to see each other again after Kat returned from Maui (because, of course, she was headed to Maui…when is she not?). On that trip, she found herself thinking, “I think I’ve found the one.” Tyler, too, felt something different about this connection. But life had other plans, and as much as they clicked, they each had growing to do. Their story, for the time being, came to a close.
Fast forward to May 6, 2020. In the middle of a global pandemic, Kat had a thought—What if I just reached out (aka DM him on Instagram…)? It had been nearly 18 months since they’d last spoken, but she figured she had nothing to lose. Tyler, surprised but happy to hear from her, didn’t hesitate to respond.
They met for a park date on July 22, 2020, and from the moment they saw each other again, it felt like no time had passed. The conversation flowed, the spark was still there, and this time, they were both ready for what was ahead.
Over the next year, their connection deepened. Then, on September 23, 2021, while in Maui (of course) —now one of their favorite places—they made their relationship official. From that moment on, the love between them was undeniable and they truly made each other whole.
Today, they happily live together in Cow Hollow, sharing nights at the restaurant below their apartment (it’s called Terzo and it’s amazing), walks along the Marina Green, figuring out what to name their future Golden Retriever, gym sessions at Crunch (shedding for the wedding…duh), cozy evenings watching their favorite shows (Severance if you are reading this in February), and, of course, Tyler’s incredible home-cooked meals—something Kat will never stop loving and appreciating.
